Snow Canyon State Park – A Local Jewel

April 26th, 2010

Contrary to its name, winter visitors will rarely find any “white stuff” at this 7,400-acre desert park. Named after Lorenzo and Erastus Snow, early Utah leaders, Snow Canyon offers 16 miles of hiking trails, technical rock climbing, horseback riding, year-round camping, nature studies, wildlife viewing, and photographic opportunities galore. All of this is set against a stunning backdrop of towering sandstone cliffs in red and white, and peaks and valleys of jumbled black lava rock interspersed with serpentine sandy washes. The red Navajo sandstone, capped by an overlay of black lava rock, makes photography, hiking, biking and camping in Snow Canyon State Park a double treat. Early spring and fall use of the park is especially appealing due to southern Utah’s moderate winter climate. Two recent volcanic cones are found near the head of the canyon.

This strikingly colorful canyon is 11 miles northwest of St. George. Facilities include a 35-unit campground, modern rest rooms, hot showers, electric hookups, sewage disposal station, a covered group-use pavilion and overflow campground. The activities and events held regularly at the park vary from exhibits to a wide range of guided tours. You’ll never do it all!

Water Heater Tips and Maintenance:

April 12th, 2010

1-Always shut off power or gas before doing anything to your water heater.

2-At least once a year, drain water from the tank to remove sediment buildup.

3-If your water heater is gas, periodically inspect water heater burner. The flame under the heater should appear blue with yellow tips.  If  it’s mostly yellow, or if it’s to sooty under there, your flu may be clogged, which is a dangerous situation.

4-At least once a year, have your water heater inspected by a service technician.

Sun River Fire Station Bid Awarded

April 5th, 2010

St. George is set to expand its fire coverage this year with the construction of an eighth fire station near the SunRiver development and the city’s southernmost exit along Interstate 15.

The City Council accepted a bid of $1.5 million to build the facility during its meeting Thursday, as the city tries to maintain its insurance rating and have stations within 1.5 miles of any structures. The city would use the fire department’s impact fee fund to pay for the project.

Velocity Construction, which has offices in St. George and Cedar City, had the low bid, and meets the city’s preference for local companies, said Marc Mortensen, assistant to the city manager.

The 12,000 square foot station will have four apparatus bays, eight dorm rooms and an 800 square foot police substation, said Kevin Taylor, deputy fire chief. The station should not only eliminate long trips from Bloomington to SunRiver, but also service any new developments along the Southern Parkway east of the development, Taylor said.
