Resident Spotlight: Ron Smith

September 21st, 2009

There are 26 sporting events that will take place during the 22 Annual Huntsman World Senior Games; one of those is the Half Marathon.  The Half Marathon will be held on Thursday, October 8, with an 8AM start time.  The Half Marathon begins at the Confluence Trailhead, which is in the south parking lot at the Dixie Center.  SunRiver is pleased to have one of their residents participating in the Half Marathon.  Ronald “Ron” Smith will be running for the first time in the Senior Games, but Ron is not new to running or races.  Ron was born and raised in California, and began running track in High School.  After college Ron settled in Northern California where he taught Astronomy and Meteorology for Santa Rosa Junior College, and that is when his true love of running began.  Ron started running distance road races and found that he was a better runner post college, than he had been in High School.  Since that time, Ron has run 30 Marathons with a personal best of 2:32.

Ron moved to SunRiver this past winter and decided to participate in the world renown Huntsman Games, and at the age of 62, he believes he has a chance at winning the entire race, but for sure taking first in his age division.  Age division are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99, 100+.  This race shouldn’t be taken lightly; it’s only for those athletes that can complete the event with a run of less than 3.0 hours.

Ron believes his economically researched decision to move to SunRiver has been a great one and he is pleased to be part of the 22nd Annual Huntsman World Senior Games.
