Advice for Healthy Living

Stay physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy! Keeping these health tips is your overall insurance policy against boredom, loneliness and premature aging. You will be glad you did.

Be happy.

Stay connected with friends and family. Be content with what you have, who you are and where you are. Take time to feed your spirit through prayer, reading, meditation, or contemplation of your blessings.

Keep Busy.

It will stop you from getting bored. It will help you stay healthy physically and mentally. The more active you are, the more fun you will have. Learn a new skill like lapidary, or learn to play an instrument, like a ukulele.

Help others.

Volunteer doing something that interests you where you can contribute to others. There are many opportunities in the SunRiver community, and around Washington County, to serve in places and for causes that could use your help.

Make New Friends.

Even if you enjoy your own company, it’s not healthy to be alone all the time. Stay in touch with old friends and meet new people. The sense of community at SunRiver makes it easy. Join a club, or five. The internet is fascinating, but don’t let it stop you from going out or become a substitute for connecting with real people.

Find an interest or hobby.

With over sixty clubs and groups at SunRiver, this is easy. When you lose track of time doing an activity, it is a good sign it’s something that you really enjoy. Find what’s right for you.

Keep Learning.

Get familiar with the internet; it is a door to a world of information. Take classes, attend presentations at the Community Center or learn a new skill at one of SunRiver’s clubs. Give your brain active and creative outlets.

Be Physically Active.

Exercise. Get a daily dose of fresh air. You are more resilient and stronger than you might think. Take advantage of the fitness classes and opportunities SunRiver offers. Recent research shows you can continue to build muscle at least into your nineties. Exercise helps you maintain or obtain better balance, strength, agility, improves your mental health and helps reduce or eliminate chronic pain.

Make Healthy Eating Choices.

There is a great deal of research being done these days into healthy lifestyles. If you are unsure about what is good, better and best for your diet, search the internet. Eat more fiber-rich and unprocessed foods, whole grains, fresh vegetables, legumes and fruits. Healthy diet and exercise make you look better too, without negative side effects.

Sleep Well.

Not as easy as it sounds? Here are a few tips that can improve your sleep quality.

A) Turn off your TV and computer at least one hour before going to sleep.

B) Keep your bedroom quiet, cool and dark.

C) Develop soothing bedtime rituals. Play or listen to relaxing music, meditate, read calming material (not the latest horror, crime, or adventure novel) or take a soothing bath.

D) Go to bed when your body tells you it’s time, and don’t push it beyond its limits except for the occasional special night out. Get to know your body’s rhythm and plan bedtime accordingly.

E) Establish a consistent bedtime.
