CS Tip: De-Skunking

De-Skunking….

Because skunks have been known to like it here at SunRiver, here is a good de-skunking tip in case your friendly K-9 happens to get sprayed while checking out this furry “smelly” little creature.
1-First check your dog’s eyes.  If his face is sprayed, his eyes will probably be red and watering. Although the spray is not blinding, it can be very painful.  Contact your Vet for help.
2-If the eyes seem to be ok, you can proceed with the de-skunking.  Here are the items you will need:
A. Rubber Gloves
B. Bucket of lukewarm water
C. 1 teaspoon mild liquid soap or dish detergent
D. 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide (its best to use a brand new bottle)
E. 1/4 cup baking soda
3-Put on the gloves. Mix the soap in the bucket of water, and wash the dog with it.  The soap will break up the oils in the skunk spray.   Then combine the hydrogen peroxide and the baking soda in a wide, open container.
4- While the mixture gurgles, it should be the worked into the dog’s fur-be sure to focus on the areas he was sprayed, although avoiding face and eyes.
5- Wait 5 to 10 minutes then rinse with lukewarm water. The oxygen producing chemical reaction between the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda should get rid of the skunk smell.
6-CAUTION: Do NOT use this remedy if your pet is on a low sodium diet.  He/she may ingest or absorb the baking soda, which is high in sodium.
