Cedar Breaks Wildflower Festival

Escape the heat of the desert floor of St. George for the annual Cedar Breaks Wildflower Festival in Brian Head, UT! This year, the festival is offering two separate activities to enjoy the beauty of nature in and around Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Cedar Breaks Wildflower Hike

On Friday, July 10, botanist Matt Ogburn will spend the day taking hikers on a wildflower tour that explores the beauty of the annual Cedar Breaks Wildflower Festival from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Through a series of short hikes, Ogburn will cover most of the diversity and beauty of the wildflower array in the Monument. Hikers will see Markagunt and Rydberg penstemon, columbine, gentian, and possibly prairie smoke and elephant head. You’ll hike the Alpine Pond trail for a chance to see the beautiful Parry Primrose. If time permits we’ll go just outside the Monument onto Brian Head Peak and check out the alpine environment there.

The hike is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Cedar Breaks National Monument Entry Station (on UT-143 in Brian Head, UT).

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT: 3 by Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at 12 noon. (If you’re reading this past the minimum enrollment date it means the class is a go and you can still sign up by calling the Zion National Park Forever Project at 435-772-3264.)

ACTIVITY LEVEL EASY: Mostly flat walking of up to 4 miles. Combined short walks or one continuous hike.

Cedar Breaks Wildflower Photography

The second field class of the weekend will be Cedar Breaks Wildflower Photography on Saturday, July 11.

Join photographer Michael Plyler during peak wildflower season in Cedar Breaks National Monument. Learn techniques to maximize your ability to photographically interpret the beauty all around you! Plyler will discuss photographing everything from the big vista to the intimate close-up, as well as when to choose one over the other. A macro lens, though not a prerequisite, will be a welcome addition to your lens arsenal. Class limited to 8 participants.

The photography expedition will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Cedar Breaks National Monument Entry Station (see address above) and is expected to take place for approximately six-and-a-half to seven hours.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT: 2 by Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 12 noon or class will cancel. (If you're reading this past the minimum enrollment date, it means the class is a go and you can still sign up by calling the Zion National Park Forever Project at 435-772-3264.)
