“Chinese mahjong is a fairly simple game,” Phillip Page said. “It’s a lot like rummy, with sets, runs and suits, but scoring and play is a little different.” The game is played with tiles and four players to a table. The group plays twice a week: Tuesday from 1-3, and Saturday 1-3.

“We come to enjoy playing the game and the fellowship with other players,” Phillip said, “It’s a lot of fun.”

Mahjong is described as a simple game to learn, and takes a lifetime to master the scoring skills and strategies. The concept behind the mahjong tiles is similar to a deck of cards.

If you don’t know the game, don’t let that stop you; the group conducts classes as needed. Novice players can start out with a three to four week training class. The length of the class depends on how quickly new players learn the basics of the game.

Phillip described the game as, “comparable to pinochle in difficulty.”

You may have seen Phillip and his wife during SunRiver’s Activity Expo last year. They were sitting at the club’s table playing mah jong. If you were one of the several people who stopped to ask questions about the game, maybe now is the time to visit and play.
